Politburo member and permanent member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee Vo Van Thuong pledged to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity after he was elected at an extraordinary session of the National Assembly in Hanoi on March 2 with 97% of votes in favour, according to the VOV.

Thuong, 53, vowed to be loyal to the Vietnamese Fatherland and people, as well as the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

“I will do his utmost to successfully fulfill the tasks assigned by the Party, State and people,” said the newly elected State President at the swearing-in ceremony.

In his address to the National Assembly session, Thuong said he deeply grasps the Party’s viewpoint of placing the people at the centre of decision making to protect their legitimate interests. He showed a strong resolve to resolutely fight against corruption and negativity, synchronously perfect the institutions for sustainable development, and build a clean and strong State apparatus for the sake of the nation and people.
